Owls

This week was "Oo Week" in kindergarten! Our class read two non-fiction books about owls. We began by creating a KWL chart. A KWL chart is a graphic organizer that helps a reader access their prior knowledge about a subject, create questions about the topic, so that they can develop a purpose for reading. KWL is an acronym for: What do we KNOW, what we WANT to know, and then what we LEARNED.

Some of the questions we wondered about were: What do owls babies look like? Can owls swim? Do owls go somewhere in the summer? How do owls get their food? What kinds of food do owls eat?

Some things we learned were: Baby owls are called owlets and they are born blind. Owls hunt for prey like: mice, sparrows and moles. They cough up the waste in owl pellets.

The most exciting part of the lesson was watching a real mother owl and her owlets on an owl-cam!
